A much younger audience would have wondered just who was Doris Day but our over 70’s members well remember the life and times of the music and films of this great star of Radio, Records and films.
She spent several years recording tracks with tracks with Les Brown, Bob Crosby and Jimmy James and appeared for nearly two years on the weekly Bob Hope Show and appeared on several television shows including her own Doris Day Show but the big screen beckoned her and she became one of Hollywood’s greatest film stars.
In a film career spanning 20 years many notable films starred Doris Day including Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, Move Over Darling and the Glass Bottom Boat stars such as Rock Hudson, James Garner, David Niven, Cary Grant and many others.
During this fantastic career she married four times, three times to men in the entertainment world and one to a restauranteur. Only one was long lasting, that to Martin Melcher who adopted Doris’s son from her first marriage and they were together for 19 years.
Following her retirement Doris lived in Carmel, California and had many stray animals which ultimately gave her the incentive to form the Doris Day Animal Foundation which she supported until her death in 2019 at the age of 97 years.
Many thanks Ray, for your delightful presentation, interspersed with some familiar snatches of familiar DD recordings, which were enjoyed by all.
We understand that Ray has an extensive number of other musical talks and so hope that we will be seeing again in the not too far distant future!
