Having researched the trip before starting off John decided that the first priority was to rent a comfortable car, not a bus sized Cadilac limo so popular in days gone by, but a bright red standout in the crowd latest version of Dodge. John prebooked hotels 300 miles apart en route the majority of which were at the side of the route which passed through eight states. Very few towns or cities were on the route which were bypassed so hotels were generally motels but were of reasonable quality.
The highlight of the trip was the Grand Canyon which was shown to us in glorious slides and which John and Lottie flew through by helicopter. Seeing is believing but believe me, it is far more grandiose than your imagination could have created. Also, more intense than one would have expected was the heat and size of the Mojave Desert.
Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Yesemite and Yellowstone National Parks also featured in Johns as well as the Gateway Arch on St. Louis
Not far away at the Lake Havasu, Arizona, was the London Bridge which was transported brick by brick and rebuilt as part of a new resort. Rumour has it that the Yanks had expected Tower Bridge and were disappointed!!
Thank you John, for a most fascinating and beautifully illustrated talk which many of us may have loved to have doneand possibly may have considered doing were we a few years younger.
